Having found success on the Xbox Live platform with Charlie Murder and the Dishwasher series, Ska Studios announced last week they’ll be releasing their next game exclusively on PlayStation 4 and the Vita. According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, the duo of James and Michelle had this to say about signing up with the PlayStation platform: “Developing with Sony is a new and exciting thing for us, but as 7 year indie veterans in search of some next-gen direction, we were absolutely blown away by their support, enthusiasm, and devotion to giving us a home on their new platforms.” Read into that as you may but this does seem like a surprise move as the ID@Xbox program has been making great strides lately.

We got some brief hands-on time with the new title at PAX Prime 2014. The game plays like a sidescrolling RPG platformer with the precise brutal combat for which Ska Studios is heralded for. The premise of the game is that you play the role of a sailor who is shipwrecked on an island which is “strange and purgatorial”. With a constant war looming in the background, travelers take refuge in the island’s sanctuaries. Sadly the world inside is just as unsafe as it is outside.

Ska Studios are crafting a game where the emphasis is being placed on the combat.  We were able to move weapons in certain ways depending on the situation. Weapons can be held in one hand and then paired with either a shield or cross-bow. Or players can go all in and brandish a weapon using two hands for greater power. Other weapons which can be used are magic staffs, throwing daggers, and Pitchfire. The size and weight of your loadout will effect your character’s agility and stamina.

The fast-paced action RPG, Salt and Sanctuary, which has familiar stylings form their past games as well as inspiration from games like Castlevania DS, will be released in 2015 on the PS4 and PS Vita.
